The Only iPhone 5 Feature That Matters

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Apple’s iPhone 5 goes on sale Friday, including a polished new look. But only one new feature actually matters: Its super-fast LTE wireless connection. With Internet access that’s amazingly quicker than before, mobile computers like the iPhone 5 can finally live up to their promise. What’s LTE?Simply put: It’s the latest version of wireless network technology, used in the U.S. by Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and more recently, Sprint. LTE has been around for a couple of years, and Apple included it in this year’s new iPad. (That’s how I know firsthand how amazing it is.)But this is the first time Apple is including LTE in an iPhone. This means millions of people will be using it for the first time over the next few months. You may hear the terms “4G” or “4G LTE” too, but nevermind the jargon. Just know that LTE is impossibly fast. Why LTE Is RevolutionaryStop me if this sounds familiar: Walking to the train station, want to load my email before I get on the train… Waiting… waiting… waiting. And, there goes my train. Or: Trying to load this map so I can find where to meet you… Loading… loading… loading… loading…In practical terms, LTE means you’ll finally be able to download stuff to your phone fast – in many cases, faster than your home broadband connection. It means you’ll finally be able to stream video – even in high resolution – without endless buffering. Or even video chat. It means you’ll load your Instagram feed in a snap. It means never waiting for your phone anymore; it’ll finally be waiting for you.Don’t get me wrong: Having an iPhone for four years (and a Palm Treo for two years before that) has been much better than the dinky candybar phones before. Relatively reliable access to maps, GPS, email, shopping, and entertainment has legitimately changed my life. But the lag of a slow mobile Internet connection – familiar to many AT&T iPhone subscribers! – has always added an element of frustration. I stopped trying to watch video on my phone a long time ago.As I’ve experienced on my iPad, LTE changes this. It’s going to be as big of an improvement to the iPhone as the iPhone was to prior phones. Or, if you’ve used a computer with a solid-state (“flash”) disk, as big of an improvement as that was from old, spinning hard drives. Especially for a mobile device, speed really matters. And don’t take my word for it. LTE got a lot of praise in the early iPhone 5 reviews. LTE “data downloads and uploads just fly,” Walt Mossberg wrote for the Wall Street Journal. “Using the iPhone 5 on LTE is nearly indistinguishable from using it on Wi-Fi,” John Gruber said at Daring Fireball. “Web pages load in a snap, Siri parses input and responds promptly.” The New York Times’ David Pogue called it “wicked-fast.”What’s The Catch? For one, there’s a risk that mobile operators – running LTE networks for the first time – will be in for a cruel surprise, just as they were with the iPhone 3G and their old networks. We simply don’t know if LTE networks will be able to keep up with rising traffic. AT&T and Verizon could each conceivably get 5 million or more new LTE users by the end of this year, and that might swamp their networks. We just don’t know. The other potential catch is that LTE ends up being so good that we use it more than we ever used 3G, costing us more money. Mobile operators are switching their pricing to match the future of their business, where Internet access is more relevant than selling “buckets” of voice minutes for phone calls. If you fall in love with streaming video or music over LTE, it may be costly. Perhaps it’ll be worth it, if you’re getting a lot of value out of it. But don’t be surprised if your mobile bill goes up rather than down over the next few years.Still, if all goes according to plan, LTE is going to be a killer feature for the iPhone 5 and for mobile computing. This stands to benefit phone makers, mobile operators, and especially application developers. Apps should work as well on mobile devices now as they do on desktop computers. And that opens all kinds of new doors.Photo: NASA/MSFC via FlickrRelated: The Real Reason AT&T And Verizon Are Switching To “Shared” Pricing Plans dan frommer Tags:#Apple#iPhone#web Related Posts center_img Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…last_img read more

Bruce Springsteen And Roger Waters Stand Up For Heroes

first_imgThe Bob Woodruff Foundation and the New York Comedy Festival presented Stand Up for Heroes last week in New York City, which featured a special appearance by Bruce SpringsteenThe event, funded in part by the generosity of Veterans on Wall Street (VOWS) and supported by founding sponsor GFI Group, Inc., brought together celebrities, military, business and government leaders, service members and their families for a night of laughter and performances from A-list musicians and comedians, as well as wounded veterans, to raise funds for programs that the Bob Woodruff Foundation supports. The amount raised last night was more than $5 million — a new record for the Stand Up for Heroes Event, now in its seventh year. The funds raised will benefit organizations across the country vetted by the Bob Woodruff Foundation for their effectiveness and success. To date, $21 million has been raised by the Stand Up for Heroes events.Comedians who took the stage for this year’s 7th annual Stand Up for Heroes event included Bill Cosby, Jim Gaffigan, Jerry Seinfeld and Jon Stewart. There was also a surprise video message from First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, expressing their support for the Bob Woodruff Foundation. The event included a sensational musical performance by Bruce Springsteen. Springsteen has performed at all seven Stand Up for Heroes benefit concerts. The night also included a live auction, which raised $750,000.Notable attendees included: CNN chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour, ABC special correspondent Juju Chang, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, General and Mrs. Dempsey, Chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff, actress America Ferrera, President and COO of Universal Studios Ron Meyer, business leader Ron Perelman and NBC anchor Brian Williams.“We are thrilled with the results from Stand Up for Heroes — the generosity and spirit exhibited that evening from all the honored guests, performers and supporters is quite humbling,” said Bob Woodruff, Co-Founder of the Bob Woodruff Foundation.“I continue to be overwhelmed by the incredible response to Stand Up for Heroes year after year,” says Caroline Hirsch, founder and owner of the New York Comedy Festival and Carolines on Broadway. “When we conceived this event seven years ago, we had high hopes for raising awareness and funds for the Bob Woodruff Foundation. The outpouring of support has far exceeded our greatest expectations.”Stand Up for Heroes, presented at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, sold out with more than 5,500 guests in attendance. The event brought together leaders from military, business, entertainment, government and philanthropy to raise funds to help post-9/11 injured service members and their families thrive long after they return to the homefront.A first for Stand Up for Heroes this year was a Hangout on Air, powered by Google. The Hangout on Air featured musical performances by Bruce Springsteen and Roger Waters and an interactive discussion between musicians on location, comedians, celebrity crashers, veterans and fans. The Hangout was available on the Bob Woodruff Foundation Google+ channel and the Bob Woodruff YouTube channel, and will remain available for guests to view post-event. The event was also live-streamed on the Bob Woodruff Foundation website.A highlight of the night was when Roger Waters performed with a band comprised of nearly two dozen musicians and singers, all of whom are wounded active service members or veterans representing all branches of the armed forces and the MusiCorps Wounded Warrior Band. MusiCorps – an organization the Bob Woodruff Foundation funds – is a rehabilitation program operating out of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center that helps injured service members recover through the healing powers of music. Roger performed with a band comprised of nearly two dozen musicians and singers, all of whom are wounded active service members or veterans representing all branches of the armed forces and the MusiCorps Wounded Warrior Band.Perhaps the most touching moment of the star-studded event was a speech given by injured service member Army Officer Larkin and his wife Rachel O’Hern. Larkin was severely wounded and lost both of his legs and one of his hands. Thanks to his many surgeons and therapists, he stood up for the first time this past May, and was able to stand on the tarmac to welcome each soldier from his platoon home from war. Larkin now walks with a cane and plans to stay on active duty. He also intends to obtain his M.B.A. and return to the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he was commissioned in 2008, to teach.Source:PR Newswirelast_img read more

Ralph Baer VideoGame Pioneer Dies at 92

first_img Register Now » Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global 2 min read Ralph H. Baer, the creator of the Magnavox Odyssey (known as the “Brown Box”), the first commercial console for home video games, died at the age of 92 on Saturday.A pioneer in the now $93 billion gaming industry, it’s likely you’ve played with the games and systems Baer invented or influenced. In addition to building the first light gun — a gun-shaped controller that allows users to shoot objects on screen — he created the forerunner to Atari’s Pong game as well as the colorful electronic memory game Simon, which made its debut in 1978 at Studio 54 and continues to be sold today.Related: Across the U.S., Bars Are Letting You Play Your Favorite Childhood Video GamesIn 1971, while employed at Sanders Associates, a defense contractor in Nashua, N.H., Baer filed for the first ever video-game patent. His papers are now housed in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and he was awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2006.So, what can entrepreneurs learn from Baer’s legacy? The biggest takeaway is this: he never stopped inventing. And, as is the case with the best entrepreneurs, his work has inspired generations of new innovators, with a promise of more to come.Related: Can Video Games in the Office Make Employees More Productive?center_img December 8, 2014 Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box.last_img read more

Should You Still Invest in Bitcoin in 2018

first_img Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. February 9, 2018 4 min read Bitcoin had quite the year in 2017. We saw its price increase well over 1000 percent — going from $1,000 at the beginning of 2017 all the way up to $19,000 by mid-December. That meteoric rise attracted people from all walks of life to invest in Bitcoin. Now hedge funds and first-time investors are looking to join the craze and rejoice in massive returns. That all said, is Bitcoin still a good investment in 2018? Have you already missed the train? Below i’ll give my opinions on this topic.(Please take note that I am not a financial advisor. Investing in cryptocurrencies is both highly speculative and risky. These opinions are my own and should be treated as such. Invest at your own risk.)What are you investing for?In my mind there are two types of people investing in cryptocurrency. Those who believe it represents the future of money and are in support of a decentralized financial system. And the others are those who are simply looking to make money. Now you don’t have to be one or the other, but more often than not the investor is leaning towards one.If you believe in the future of money then you are investing in this currency in hopes to one day use it to make purchases. You are also planning to hold it with hopes that it’s going to appreciate. That said, in order for Bitcoin to ever be used as an everyday currency it simply cannot fluctuate thousands of dollars a day. The question you need to ask yourself is whether or not it’s going to settle at it’s current price. If you believe it’s going to rise in the long term then you should make the investment knowing you’re going to need to ride through a ton of fluctuation. If you’re simply looking to make money with cryptocurrencies then it’s a simpler answer. Bitcoin is very volatile. As I stated above Bitcoin hit close to $20,000 in mid December 2017 and a month later dropped to about $11,000. When there is market fluctuation of that nature there are opportunities to make money, and lots of it. I would imagine the volatility won’t end anytime soon. That said, if you’re looking to trade on the short game there’s definitely an opportunity. How can you get started?1. ResearchIf you’re a first timer in the crypto world I suggest doing some research first. Never invest solely based off someone else’s opinions and always get informed before investing in any asset. It’s common for people to jump into cryptos head first just because they see a lot of green. This is a bad habit and will lead to bad decisions down the road. For starters, learn about the blockchain and how it’s revolutionizing the world of finance. I suggest checking out Ivan on Tech and listening to some of his YouTube videos. He does a great job of breaking down the concepts as well as giving some expert opinions on recent news.2. Open a trading accountOnce you’re ready to invest I suggest opening up an account on Coinbase. This platform features a clean user interface and is great for first time investors. You can sign up here for a free $10 in credits. Once you’ve created your Coinbase account, I recommend making all of your trades using Coinbase’s exchange called GDAX. This exchange gives you access to real-time data and graphs not to mention lower fees. There are also plenty of Youtube videos that show you step-by-step walkthroughs on how to access and use these various exchanges. They may look daunting at first but trust me, it’s easy once you know how.3. Secure your coinsLast but not least you need to be able to secure your Bitcoins. You can keep them on Coinbase but I suggest moving them offline or onto a cold storage wallet. Two popular ones are the Nano Ledger S and the Trezor. These wallets allow you to keep your Bitcoin offline and in a secure location.Exchanges have been known to get hacked in the past and those who kept their coins on those exchanges have lost everything. That said, it’s better to be safe than sorry.Final ThoughtsLike any investment you need to be prepared to lose everything. In addition to that, you need to continue to do research and stay up to date on current trends. In my personal opinion, Bitcoin still remains a good investment in 2018 regardless if you are investing short or long.(By Renzo Costarella)(The author of this article holds long positions in BTC, ETH, IOTA, ADA, XLM and TRX) Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global This story originally appeared on Due Register Now »last_img read more
