Irish PM in unprecedented attack on Vatican

first_img Share Share Sharing is caring! Share Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said the relationship between the Catholic Church and the state could never be the same.Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny has launched an unprecedented attack on the Catholic Church in parliament. He said the recent Cloyne Report into how allegations of sex-abuse by priests in Cork had been covered up showed change was urgently needed.Mr Kenny said the historic relationship between church and state in Ireland could not be the same again. He said the report exposed the elitism, dysfunction, disconnection, and narcissism that dominated the Vatican.“The rape and torture of children were downplayed or ‘managed’ to uphold instead the primacy of the institution, its power, standing and ‘reputation’,” the taoiseach said.‘Unprecedented’“The revelations of the Cloyne Report have brought the government, Irish Catholics and the Vatican to an unprecedented juncture.”Opposition leader Michael Martin said that when he met the Papal Nuncio after the Murphy report into the cover-up of abuse in the Dublin diocese in 2009, he told him the government expected the full cooperation of the Vatican into the Cloyne inquiry. However, he said, the Vatican chose to focus on the interests of the church rather than the children abused by its clergy and shielded by its leaders.During the debate, the church was called upon to publish the audits currently being sent to every Catholic diocese in the country.Sinn Fein spokesperson on health and children Caoimhghin O’Caolain said the government should consider coordinating with the Northern Ireland Executive on any future inquiries – particularly as four of the Catholic dioceses straddle the border.BBC Newscenter_img 27 Views   no discussions Tweet FaithInternationalLifestylePrint Irish PM in unprecedented attack on Vatican by: – July 20, 2011last_img read more

Popular Book Sale Expands Its Reach to Further Benefit Homeless

first_imgFacebook69Tweet0Pin0Submitted by the Olympia Unitarian Universalist CongregationHow do you move over 10,000 used books donated from the community to one building for a giant book sale? It takes enthusiastic volunteers and a good cause.  Books, Brownies and Beans is one of the largest one-day used book sales in the South Sound. Now in its 14th, year, this popular used book sale is organized by the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation (OUUC). Over the years it has raised a total of almost $80,000 to benefit the homeless.“This year we are broadening our efforts in order to contribute to more organizations out there helping the homeless,” said Sally Brennard, of the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation. Past sales benefitted Out of the Woods homeless shelter at the OUUC. This year proceeds from the sale will go to additional organizations, like Sidewalk, Community Youth Services, Quixote Village and Interfaith Works’ overnight shelter and warming center.Books, Brownies and Beans has gained a loyal following of serious and casual book enthusiasts who appreciate the huge selection of books at bargain prices. Books come from every corner of the literary world, from Pulitzer Prize winners to textbooks and everything in between. There is also a café selling a selection of fresh baked brownies, hot beverages, plus other treats. Live music plays throughout the day provided by a talented collection of musicians who rotate through.“The best thing about this sales is how the community comes together to make it happen. We’ve got more than 100 volunteers who collect, sort, and stack the thousands of books that are donated. And of course we’ve got the book lovers who line up early in the morning to buy the books. And the money goes to a great cause. It’s win, win, win,” said Mark Swanson, of the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation. In 2016, during a remodel of the church, the sale was conducted online only. There were concerns among organizers that the missed year would affect the donations and turnout for the following year. “But nope,” said Linda Crabtree, a past organizer. “The next year the whole doggone building was covered with books and people were lined up before our doors even opened – and it was 18°F out!” she added.Books, Brownies and Beans takes place on Saturday, February 25, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 2315 Division St. NW, Olympia, WA 98502. There is no entrance fee and visitors are encouraged to bring their own tote bags.last_img read more

Lenovo Z2 Plus vs Xiaomi Mi 5: Similar price, similar hardware but only one winner

first_imgThis is a question that we get all the time: Which is the best phone to buy for Rs 20,000, a phone that is powerful? Earlier, you would get phones powered by mid-range, mainstream processors in this price range. But this year it has changed. There are a number of phones in this price bracket, or close to it, that use top of the line processors like Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 or something similar. Now it is true that specifications don’t matter as much as phone companies will like you to believe. A phone with a Snapdragon 615 can be as powerful as the one powered by Snapdragon 820, especially in day-to-day use. The extra performance in more high-end processors is utilised only while gaming or multi-tab browsing. Then there are other components, such as camera and screen, which affect how you use a phone in a more direct way. But yet, the allure of getting a phone with top class components is strong one. A lot of people do want to buy a “powerful phone” at relatively affordable prices. Also Read: Best phone for Rs 20,000? No, not Lenovo Z2 Plus, here are 4 phones that are better For consumers who want power on the cheap, there are two very obvious options: the Lenovo Z2 Plus and the Xiaomi Mi 5. Both phones use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor — though there are differences on the paper — and have lots of RAM. They also claim to be true-blue blooded high-end phones sold for more affordable prices, although only one of them is worth your money and attention.advertisementThat phone is the Xiaomi Mi 5The reason why Xiaomi Mi 5 is better than Lenovo Z2 Plus is simple: The Mi 5 is a true high-end phone with premium components that Xiaomi tries to sell at an aggressive price. When we reviewed the Mi 5 a few months ago earlier in the summer, when the phone was launched in India, we had found that this was a very good phone but its slightly higher price of Rs 25,000 held it back. Now, the phone is available at a price of Rs 19,999, which makes it a very sweet deal. The Z2 Plus, on the other hand, is sort of a pretender, although with an even more aggressive price. But let’s keep it short and quickly tell you, why the Xiaomi Mi 5 is a better deal compared to the Lenovo Z2 Plus. The Mi 5 is a better looking phone. With its glass and metal body, it looks as premium as a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S6, phones that debuted at prices closer to Rs 50,000. Although finishing of the Mi 5 is not as good as what you get on a phone like the Galaxy S7, it is better than what Z2 Plus sports. The Z2 also uses glass back cover. But its design is more commonplace, giving it a chunky squarish look. The result is that irrespective of how you look at the two phones, the Mi 5 with its slimmer body and more premium materials is better looking phone. With the curves on the side and a compact frame — although the Z2 Plus is also fairly compact — it also looks better in hands. The Mi 5 has a better camera. Although compared to the camera of the Nexus 5X and OnePlus 3, the Mi 5 has a weaker camera. But compared to the shooter in the Z2 Plus, it is definitely better, not only in good light but also in low light.Compared to the Z2 Plus, the Mi 5 heats up less. This is possibly because of the Mi 5 has a slightly slower processor. The Snapdragon 820 inside the Mi 5 runs has a top speed of around 1.8GHz whereas the Snapdragon inside the Z2 Plus can reach up to 2.2GHz. But more than that it is likely due to the design because processors anyways don’t run at their top speeds for prolonged duration. Most of the time they run at a speed of around 1GHz. That also explains why the Mi 5 performs as well as Z2 Plus despite whatever little difference the two phones have in the theoretical speed.Although this is a matter of personal taste, the MIUI inside the Mi 5 is a more mature, more polished software compared to the user interface that Lenovo is using in the Z2 Plus. This Z2 Plus software, dubbed ZUI, is a mixture of stock Android and elements copied from Apple’s iOS. And it’s neither here, nor there. The results are confusing. On the other hand MIUI inside the Mi 5 is distinct. Surely, people used to stock Android won’t like its design and style. But other than that the MIUI is as good of a user interface and software as any.Sum of it allIf you ask me, I will spend the money on Mi 5 if I am looking for a phone with a budget of Rs 19,999. Although the Mi 5 is still officially priced a bit above Rs 20,000, it is almost always on sale nowadays at Rs 19,999. At this price it offers more bang for the buck than the Z2 Plus, although neither of these phones are perfect. In the Rs 19,999 Z2 Plus variant you do get extra 1GB RAM and extra 32GB internal storage. But the difference between 3GB and 4GB RAM is minuscule. As for the storage, the Xiaomi uses faster 32GB storage — UFS standard — that any days is better than slower but more storage. advertisementAlso Read: Lenovo Z2 Plus: Perfect example of how good specs don’t make a phone greatlast_img read more

Nobody goes to meetings with 300 bags: ED replies to Mallya’s plea in PMLA court

first_imgAn Enforcement Directorate counsel on Wednesday argued that former liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s plea in a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court, in Mumbai, was non-consequential.A court in London on December 10 ordered that Mallya, wanted for Rs 9,000 crore loans default by his companies and facing charges of fraud and money laundering, be sent back to India. Mallya had run off to London to escape arrest. The ED had moved a special court in UK, seeking to declare him a fugitive under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA).Following the Monday order, Mallya’s lawyer on Tuesday sought dismissal of the ED’s plea to declare him a fugitive, citing he left India to attend a meeting.”There was no secret departure. He left the country to attend a planned meeting (of World Motor Sport in Geneva),” he said.To this end, the ED’s counsel, DN Singh, said, “They have been stating that he had gone for a meeting, but have they shown any diary entry or any other proof by way of an invite or anything to show that he had gone to attend this meeting? Moreover, who goes to attend a meeting with 300 bags and a huge cargo?”Desai had argued that for anyone to be declared a fugitive, two issues have to be satisfied. One that the person has left the country to avoid the investigation and second that being abroad, he refuses to return.Desai also reiterated his argument that Mallya did not leave the country secretly as claimed by the ED.advertisementSingh said that in Mallya’s case both the mentioned issues did arise.”Despite summons and three NBW warrants issued against him, Mallya refused to join probe. The extradition process is a proof enough that he was not willing to return,” he said.Desai also claimed that Mallya was a non-resident Indian (NRI) with a house in London and his whereabouts were known to the banks and investigating agencies. The businessman was ready to surrender in the United Kingdom where he had been living for 28 years, but he could not be put in the hands of the agencies which were not ready to follow procedures, he added.Desai wound up his argument on Tuesday. He will further argue the case on Monday.(With inputs from PTI)ALSO READ | Major boost to Indian agencies, UK court orders Vijay Mallya’s extraditionALSO READ | Please take it: Vijay Mallya tweets humble offer to pay 100% backALSO WATCH | So Shayari: Vijay Mallya gets spookedlast_img read more
