The Governor’s Office is the only entity responding so far to our queries on Robert Jackson, aka Black.Jackson had been incarcerated for a string of violent home invasions, one involving a pregnant woman who was sexually assaulted; that case was from 2008. The Governor’s Office said and I quote:“I can understand the concerns that have been expressed to you. However, Mr Jackson served all of the period that he was committed to prison to serve and was released accordingly. There is no requirement within Prisons Ordinance for any victim or community notification when anyone is released from prison without this being for the purposes of parole. Although it is possible for prisoners to seek voluntary supervision upon release, there is no statutory supervision requirements contained within the Prisons Ordinance.” End quote.The Governor adds that the Police are aware of Mr. Jackson’s release from Her Majesty’s Prison on September 2nd, 2016. For Time.com, it meant killing “deks” on the homepage. “One of the things we came to realize was that the way people browse the Web has evolved into a ‘quick-scan’ mindset, which is very different from how they read print media,” says Sean Villafranca, design director, Time.com. “This is why we decided to do away with story summaries and designed with headlines only.”With editors and writers, Villafranca says Time.com managing editor Josh Tyrangiel “put the impetus on them to create more compelling and concise headlines, so that they wouldn’t have to rely on a dek to make it more interesting.”Wiping the Slate CleanFor Time.com’s most recent redesign, launched last October, Villafranca and his team took inventory of the existing site, then established a hierarchy of how the content would be presented. “We moved blocks of content around different areas on the page to see how a user’s eye would track.”Ultimately, a modular design offers flexibility down the road. “If we feel that the multimedia module should go higher on the page, we can easily do that.” MacKenzie agrees: “If you are a content site, make it easy to keep it fresh. You could have the best looking homepage in the world—if it’s static, it’s useless.”Striking a BalanceAnother challenge is striking a balance between the needs of ad sales and editorial.“The biggest challenge we had, and will continue to have, is balancing the needs of the business side of the operation with the creative/editorial side,” says MacKenzie. “We often have very different ideas about the homepage and how it should represent the brand as a whole. But the business side recognizes that the creative/editorial side is what truly differentiates the site from any other in the space—it defines the Motor Trend brand.”This is important, he says, because the lead generation side of the business is largely becoming commoditized. “The brand adds value because it creates a community of interest that will come to the site regularly,” MacKenzie says. “We have seen clear evidence this recently—lead gen has been hit by the economic downturn, but the number of visitors to the homepage”—in other words, visitors who have not come to the site through search engines—“has remained strong.” ResultsMotortrend.com’s traffic has grown gradually since an initial major redesign of the site in 2006, from approximately one million unique visitors and six million page views per month to more than three million uniques and 17 million to 18 million page views. “It is hard to know what effect the design has had on the overall numbers,” MacKenzie says. “Stories that reach the top of the home page flash box tend to perform better than stories that do not make it there.” Adding the “Wide Open Throttle” box to the homepage—a blog-style content aggregation piece with 15-20 posts a day—has resulted in 600,000 additional page views per month. In the nonbinding referendum, roughly 98 percent of voters rejected President Nicolas Maduro’s plan to replace the constitution.More than 7 million Venezuelans voted in the referendum, according to the local university administrators tasked with overseeing the vote. NPR’s Philip Reeves notes that number — which includes nearly 700,000 expatriots who voted overseas — constitutes about a third of Venezuela’s registered voters.“It’s a way to show how many people are actually against the government, and to give support to people that are actually doing the protests and have been arrested,” expat Andrea de Lima, who participated in South Florida, tells reporter Keyvan Antonio Heydari.Still, Maduro has vowed that Sunday’s referendum will do nothing to stall a July 30 election for delegates for a constituent assembly, which will be responsible for rewriting the country’s 18-year-old constitution. That rewrite would have the capacity to dissolve the National Assembly, an opposition-heavy body of lawmakers that has been a source of frustration for Maduro for years.It was an earlier attempt to dissolve this legislature — an attempt made by the Supreme Court, then quickly reversed in early April — that set off more than 100 days of unrest in Venezuela. The anti-government protests, and their clashes with government security forces, have seen nearly 100 people killed and more than 1,500 injured in the three and a half months that followed.The referendum Sunday was also marred by violence. A 61-year-old nurse was shot dead and three more were injured when men on motorbikes — described by the opposition as members of a “paramilitary” — opened fire on a polling place.Maduro has positioned his proposed constitutional rewrite as a solution to this continuing unrest, calling Sunday’s vote “a meaningless internal exercise.”But NPR’s Philip Reeves notes the unofficial referendum does send a message.“It clearly states that Maduro is as deeply unpopular as he has long been thought to be, and it shows, as the polls have suggested, that Venezuelans are overwhelmingly against the idea of establishing a constitutional assembly,” Philip reports.And NPR’s Greg Allen says that sentiment extends to Venezuelans living in the U.S. One expatriot, Mario Di Giovanni, tells Greg that while the vote isn’t official, the process is supported by Venezuela’s constitution.“So for us it’s binding,” Di Giovanni says, “and we are following the constitution. “Copyright 2017 NPR.
